The RFEDA Spanish Karting Championship started this weekend with its first four-point test in Campillos (Málaga).
After a previous weekend of testing, we had enough good feeling to achieve good results, as it finally ended up happening.
We started with qualifying, at which point we were possibly the fastest so far. After marking the first two sectors in purple, we reached the last sector with Hurtado and Briz ready to place 1st and 2nd when our rivals had already seen the flag, but we ran into a slower driver (both team cars were together) and We lost all options to improve the return.
Already in the qualifying rounds, we managed to maintain the type despite not having the best possible starting positions, starting from the outside of turn 1.
In these rounds we achieved a P1 and P3 from Hurtado and Briz in one of them, as well as two P4 of both pilots in the following rounds.
In these rounds on Saturday we were able to glimpse who our rivals were for Sunday: a very strong Ratel and Zunzarren who came to debut in the senior category with everything.
Finally, the classification would be with Hurtado starting P3 and Briz P5 for Sunday, with a Ratel in first position and Zunzarren starting between the two team cars.
Already on Sunday, it was confirmed in the Warm Up who were going to be invited to fight for the leading positions in the two races.
In Race 1, we managed to place ourselves at exit P2 and P3. But, after Zunzarren's insistence on attacks, Ratel (who also had an incredible pace) left, preventing a fight for victory.
After this, Zunzarren managed to attack Briz again, causing Hurtado to leave alone, confirming his P2.
Briz, finally, was unable to recover the position, because the remaining laps were not indicated from the wall at any time, and Briz thought of collaborating with Zunzarren to hook up with Hurtado again without launching attacks, when they passed the finish line without He didn't even try to overtake.
After finishing the race and observing the data, we saw that Ratel was gaining 2 tenths per lap on us, but above all he was the fastest by far in S2.
Due to this, and seeing that with the same conditions we were not going to be able to fight for victory, we were considering several options to try to turn the situation around.
Among them we highlight the following: setting a shorter gear to be able to exit a curve better, increasing the pressure to slide more, or touching the chassis at the rear.
Finally, we decided to loosen up the rear cars a little by raising the pressure so that they would rotate earlier and be able to give gas sooner, to try to reduce those differences, even knowing that it could harm us at the end of the race due to tire consumption. And it worked as we expected, besides not affecting us in the final part.
Going into Race 2 it seemed like we had everything a little against us. We started on the outside in turn 1 with both cars about to start in the even zone, Ratel was on pole and Zunzarren between the two cars.
After losing Hurtado's P2 at the start, the group began to collaborate until lap 3-4, when Ratel, Hurtado, Zunzarren and Briz were pushing to get away from the pursuers. At that moment, Zunzarren attacked Hurtado again, who was not expecting it and had followed a normal line, causing both of them to lose time.
This caused Ratel, once again, after Zunzarren's repeated attacks, to leave alone towards a new victory. Between attacks, Zunzarren managed to chase Ratel, who after having given everything at the beginning of the race seemed to be suffering a lot with the tires.
Finally, P3 and P4 for Hurtado and Briz, a result that does not know much because at least in this second round they could have fought for victory, but which is undoubtedly a very good way to start the championship.
As for the other Seniors, Alonso managed to consolidate himself in the middle zone, after debuting in the CEK for the first time. The Canarian driver was sensational, holding his own in Race 1 and launching a comeback in Race 2. Alonso, who started from the middle of the grid, had a shorter development than the rest of the drivers. This development allowed us to fight with the others for position, allowing it to exit the curve quite well and, although without as much edge, being able to launch itself under braking.
Finally P25 and P21 for him. Mercier, for his part, did not have the best weekend. After starting last, in Race 1 we reached P16, but after braking by another car in turn 5 of the last lap we had to abandon. In Race 2, and once again starting last, they hit us at the rear in the middle of the climb in turn 3, which caused us to spin, in addition to having damaged the rear sidepod. Even with this, Mercier continued on the track, finally getting a P31 due to abandonment by the other drivers. It certainly hasn't been the best weekend for him.
We also had a participant in the KZ category. I had never worked with this type of kart, but the truth is it didn't seem too difficult. Fiorini did not get a good classification, so Race 1 had to start from P28.
